Lights Over Liberty Bay

The last of the Summer Nights concerts falls on Tuesday, August 11, and this year the evening does not end when the music does. At about nine o'clock, a few hundred drones will lift off the waterfront boardwalk and fly a short show over Liberty Bay. They belong to the Peninsula School District's student drone team, which is based down in Gig Harbor, owns more than three hundred drones, and travels to put on shows for other towns.

The show was meant for the Fourth of July, to mark the country's two hundred and fiftieth birthday, but it asked for more hands and more time than the holiday could spare, so the city moved it to the end of the summer instead.

Kalimba, a tribute to Earth, Wind and Fire, plays the park from six to eight. Bring a blanket and stay put afterward. If you are still out the following night, look northeast, because the Perseids peak on the 12th.
